November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, and the Canadian Mental Health Association in Alberta is taking the opportunity to highlight a growing mental health crisis.
Over the last several years, men have accounted for 75 per cent of completed suicides in Canada. A University of British Columbia study surveyed 1450 Canadian men and found nearly half were at risk of major depression, with one-in-three experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
The majority of studies identify the deeply-rooted stigma surrounding men and their mental health as a key factor. Men are less likely to discuss their struggles with friends, family or professionals, and traditional gender expectations placed upon men make them more prone to fearing judgment if they seek support.
