Canadians’ mental health has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. Rising living costs, housing pressures, AI-driven workplace change, climate anxiety, and global uncertainty are placing growing strain on individuals and communities. These pressures are already contributing to a 36% loss in productivity and 11% absenteeism, costing employers an estimated $5,500 to $28,500 per employee annually.

Drawing on MHRC’s longitudinal dataset dating back to April 2020, as well as new findings from 2025 supported by cross-sector partners including GreenShield, this report identifies insights across three areas:

  • Workers and their wellbeing
  • Youth mental health
  • Gambling-related harms

Based on these findings, MHRC identifies four priority areas for leaders in 2026:

  • Workplace mental health and productivity
  • AI and digital tools
  • Men’s mental health
  • Substance and behavioural addiction
