Advocate for Persons with Disabilities 2025–2027 Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan outlines the Advocate’s priorities for strengthening inclusion, access, and well-being for Albertans with disabilities over the next three years. As ALIGN continues to act as an advocate for service providers across Alberta, we will use this plan to help inform our ongoing sector advocacy, policy engagement, and collaboration with government and community partners.

The Advocate for Persons with Disabilities represents the rights, interests and viewpoints of persons with disabilities. The strategic plan serves as the basis for key actions the Advocate and the Office of the Advocate for Persons with Disabilities will undertake to champion and support the inclusion of persons with disabilities in Alberta’s social and economic fabric.

The Advocate’s 2025–2027 Strategic Priorities and Objectives focus on improving access to government services, promoting an adequate standard of living, and increasing disability awareness. By addressing systemic barriers, poverty, and stigma, the OAPD aims to enhance the rights, well-being, and inclusion of Albertans with disabilities.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Improving access to government services by addressing system navigation barriers and enhancing communication and coordination.
  • Championing an adequate standard of living through examination of poverty, income supports, and financial stability for persons with disabilities.
  • Promoting disability awareness through education to reduce stigma, foster understanding, and advance human rights and inclusion.

The Plan reflects a human rights and social model of disability, grounded in the lived experiences of Albertans with disabilities, their families, and communities.

ALIGN’s goal is to ensure that the voices and experiences of those delivering front-line disability services are represented in provincial discussions and system improvements. If you have any questions, reflections, or if you would like to contribute your thoughts to ALIGN’s ongoing advocacy in this area, please feel free to reach out directly to ALIGN’s Executive Director Sonja Polz, mailto:sonjap@alignab.ca.
