The discussion will begin with understanding Bill C-92, which is crucial for addressing the needs of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit children and families. We will explore why this legislation is necessary and its key provisions. To provide context, a brief history will be presented highlighting First Nations’ significance and jurisdiction in these matters.

Our conversation will touch upon the initiatives of the Our Children Our Way Society, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation in our efforts. Additionally, we will review relevant Supreme Court decisions that have shaped the landscape of children’s rights and family services. To conclude, we will consider the recent decision made by the Assembly of First Nations in October and provide resources that can support your agency moving forward.

PRESENTER Rhonda Barraclough
Rhonda Barraclough has worked in the human service field for over 30 years, with 17 of those as the Executive Director of the ALIGN Association of Community Services. She is a social worker and has worked as a Child Care Counselor, a Child Protection worker, a Supervisor and a Manager for both British Columbia and Alberta governments. She has also worked in the non-profit sector as an employee and a consultant. 

Rhonda grew up in Alberta and has a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Calgary, a Post-Bachelor Diploma from Simon Fraser University and a Masters of Adult Education in Social Policy from the University of Alberta. 

Rhonda strongly advocates for vulnerable people and those who work with them. Rhonda lives in Edmonton, Alberta..
