The Government of Canada’s $350 million Emergency Community Support Fund is now open. The Emergency Community Support Fund supports community organizations helping vulnerable people during the COVID-19 crisis. Community organizations may seek funds to undertake a wide range of activities and to serve a wide range of vulnerable groups.

Community organizations may apply for funds through either the Canadian Red Cross, Community Foundations of Canada or the United Way Centraide network. The right place to apply depends on the community organization’s type:

  • Non-profit organizations may apply to the Canadian Red Cross’ national portal here.
  • Registered charities and other qualified donees may apply to Community Foundations of Canada’s national portal here or to their local United Way Centraide (check the United Way Centraide Canada’s website here for information on how to apply).

Community organizations of both types can apply to the Canadian Red Cross for training and equipment to help their staff and volunteers prevent disease transmission.

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate recently posted a tip sheet on their Facebook page on communicating digitally with children. This resource for staff was well received. We have had a number of requests from child-serving organizations about sharing this tip sheet with their staff and other groups.

Attached is the tip sheet and below is a link to our website where the tip sheet and other resources are available. Feel free to share these within your organization and with other groups who may find this information useful:

As Alberta moves towards a gradual resumption of activities and a reopening of businesses and services, Children’s Services is near ready to resume the important work of providing in-person services to children, youth and families in their homes and communities.

CS is in the process of developing a phased plan and strategy to resume face to face contact, casework, and assessments, moving to a ‘new normal’ in child intervention practice. Later this week Messages and Guidances will be provided to agencies and caregivers from CS.

The focus will be the health and safety of staff, children, youth ,caregivers, and the plan aims to support everyone’s safety. Stay tuned.
