ALIGN Update from Children’s Services – Name Changes to Youth Treatment Centres July 6, 2022

Message from Jessica Winship Child Intervention Children’s Services to Rhonda Barraclough ALIGN Association E.D. July 6, 2022

In the work we do within Children’s Services – Child Intervention, the words we use can have incredible power. For not only our children, youth and families, but also for our colleagues and community partners. That’s why, today, I am excited to share some information on the rebranding of our four provincial intensive youth treatment facilities.

For many years, these facilities have been known under different terms: youth assessment centres (or YACs), specialized group homes, and other names which don’t properly reflect the breadth of services provided to our most complex youth. As such, it is important that we dispel misconceptions for our stakeholders, of all ages, so that they can get to know our facilities for what they really are: Campus-Based Treatment Centres.

Going forward, the names of these facilities have changed, and are as follows:

  • Yellowhead Youth Campus-Based Treatment Centre
  • Sifton Campus-Based Treatment Centre
  • Lac La Biche Campus-Based Treatment Centre
  • High Prairie Campus-Based Treatment Centre

What does Campus-Based Treatment mean? Campus-Based Care provides 24/7 intensive and therapeutic treatment care for youth with complex emotional and behavioural needs. In addition to on-site clinical and assessment services, these Centres provide housing, intensive recreation therapy, on-site education and academic support, as well as discharge and transition planning. Ultimately, our Campus-Based Treatment Centres work with complex youth to provide a holistic approach to wellness, so that they gain the skills and supports they need to return home or to a community placement.

In addition to this rebranding, we are also pleased to announce that the Lac La Biche and Yellowhead Youth centres will be undergoing renovations to better suit the needs of our clients. Other new program supports will include the introduction of a service dog to the High Prairie centre as well as NMT (Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics) training and Addictions/Occupational Therapy services for all four centres.

Children’s Services is incredibly proud of the work done by staff at our Campus-Based Treatment Centres. With new names, comes a renewed sense of purpose and dedication in helping to create the best possible outcomes for our province’s children, youth and families. We thank you for our continued community partnership and shared commitment to our young people.
